A specialist in refugee rights

International Relations at Anglo-American University

One of the most important foreign graduates of Anglo-American University is Hadi Al Khatib. Hadi comes from Syria, where he studied law. His studies were interrupted in 2013 by the war. He graduated from the AAU in 2016 in the program International Relations. He then worked in Tanzania, Greece, but also in the Czech Republic, where he could develop his specialization in refugee rights with a special focus on capacity building.

Hadi was already very active as a student. In his spare time, he worked with Amnesty International and dealt with issues of refugees and the European Union. He participated in more than 40-panel discussions, presented at secondary schools, participated in campaigns and wrote articles. In his graduation work, he focused on the topic of borders and perception of identity.

Hadi has applied his knowledge in practice in NGOs and other institutions in regions where the refugee crisis is most urgent. In Greece, he cooperated with three NGOs, including the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), with the city of Thessaloniki, while conducting research on the European migration crisis. In 2018, Hadi was given the opportunity to work in one of the largest refugee camps in the world in Tanzania. He was one of three international employees among 83 local NRC staff. He trained other staff in the camp and worked on the research.

Currently, Hadi is working with two initiatives in Greece: the NGO Inana, which he co-founded, and his second project is “The Refugee Trauma Initiative's Youth Capacity Building”. Inana focuses on community integration through creative expression. In the second initiative, he works as a consultant. The aim of this project is to facilitate the search for solutions for displaced communities with international NGOs and governments.

In the future, Hadi plans to use his experience in consulting services.
