International Student and Alumni Meetup Ostrava

On the 12th of October 2023, the Moravian-Silesian region in Czechia witnessed a remarkable gathering of international students and alumni from various Czech universities. The event, held at the Ostrava University's Faculty of Education Department of Human Movement Studies, was the first of its kind, aimed at fostering connections and networking among the diverse academic community that calls Moravian-Silesian region in Czechia home. Representatives from regional companies presented career opportunities to more than 100 participants from 59 countries.

Welcome and Melodic Delights
The evening commenced with a warm welcome from the organizers, setting the tone for the night. This was followed by a soul-stirring performance by Osamělé Palačinky, a cello trio that enchanted the audience with their live music, which added a layer of artistry to the event.

Insights from Alumni
One of the highlights of the evening was the Alumni Talks. A moderated discussion with local alumni provided invaluable insights and inspiration for the attendees. Their journey from being students to accomplished professionals left a lasting impression, showing the power of education in the Moravian-Silesian region.

Navigating Academia in Czechia
For those who are considering pursuing higher education in Czechia, the Study in Czechia presentation offered comprehensive information on choosing the right university. It served as an official source of guidance for those embarking on their academic journey in the country. "We believe that international experience changes individuals and society for the better. The number of international students is increasing each year which is a good news for our society. Our agency wants to make sure that your relationship with Czechia is a long term engagement. Whether you decide to stay or move after you finish your studies, we'd like to keep the relationship going to strengthen the Czechia alumni network and to support and cooperate with you on many other levels, whatever you do," said Soňa Lippmann, the Head of Communication and Analytical Division at the Czech National Agency for International Education and Research (DZS).

The Path to Employment
The Ostrava Expat Centre session covered the crucial topic of finding employment in the Czech labour market. Attendees learned about the steps to take after graduation and gained insight into the path to professional success in this dynamic region. The Ostrava Expat Centre also invited all attendees to join their upcoming events.

Fun and Networking

In an interactive and engaging session, the Guided Networking activity emphasised a fun and introvert-friendly approach to networking. Participants had the chance to break the ice, share ideas and build connections.

 Open Networking and Opportunities

The event culminated in an open networking session where attendees continued to network and make connections in an unstructured, free-flowing environment. This allowed everyone to follow up with new acquaintances and explore opportunities in a relaxed setting.

Partner and University Expo
In addition to the rich programme, the "Partner and University Expo" enabled participants to meet local universities (VSB-Technical University OstravaSilesian University in OpavaUniversity of Ostrava), companies (Hella ForviaTietoevry) and the student organisation Erasmus Student Network Ostravská from the Moravian-Silesian region. They discovered the alumni services offered by their respective alma maters, and students, both current and former, had the chance to explore future job opportunities with local companies. The Expo, which ran throughout the event, provided a platform for valuable interactions.

A Remarkable Evening
The first regional event for international students and alumni of Czech universities in Ostrava was an outstanding success. The event was not only a testament to the thriving international academic community in Czechia but also a celebration of the rich cultural diversity that enriches the Moravian-Silesian region. "The community of around 50,000 international degree students in Czechia is very important in everyday life. Academic and social interaction with students from all over the world can provide our students with real educational and career benefits. It forces students to confront different interpersonal and communication styles, which makes them better active listeners and critical thinkers. And in my view, that’s what the society needs in these days more than ever," said Ivana Adamiková, the Head of the Centre for International Cooperation at the University of Ostrava

As the evening came to a close, participants left the event with new friendships, knowledge and the promise of exciting opportunities.
