Navigating the Job Market in Czechia: CV Tips and What to Expect from Interviews

Finding a job as a student in Czechia can feel overwhelming at first. Whether you're looking for a part-time job, an internship, or your first full-time role, it's normal to have questions. What should your CV look like? What are interviews like? Are you doing things the right way?

I asked myself the same questions when I started applying. The good news is that once you understand what employers expect, the process becomes much easier. Here are a few things that helped me.

How to create a CV that works in Czechia

Most Czech CVs are simple, clear, and easy to read. Recruiters often spend only a few seconds looking at each application, so it's best to keep your CV to one page, use clear headings, and avoid unnecessary design elements.

What should you include?

  • Your name, email address, and phone number
  • Your education, including your university and study programme
  • Work experience, including part-time jobs
  • Skills such as languages, software, and other tools
  • A simple and professional photo

Even if you don't have much work experience yet, don't worry. University projects, presentations, student organisations, and teamwork experience can all strengthen your CV.

One of the biggest mistakes students make is sending the same CV to every employer. Take a few minutes to adjust it for each position. Use keywords from the job description and highlight the experience and skills that match the role.

What Are Interviews in Czechia Like?

Every company is different, but most interviews follow a similar structure. The examples below come from my own experience applying for jobs in Czechia.

Step 1: The HR Interview

This is usually a short online call. The recruiter wants to learn more about you, understand why you applied, and check your language level. Common questions include:

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • Why are you interested in this role?
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?
Step 2: The Role-Specific Interview

The next stage depends on the position. You may be asked to complete a practical task, an Excel test, a technical assessment, or a problem-solving exercise. For business and finance roles, basic Excel skills and logical thinking are often tested.

Sometimes both interview stages happen on the same day. Other times they are scheduled separately.

Understanding Czech Work Culture

Knowing a few local workplace expectations can make a difference during the hiring process.

  • Be on time. Even a few minutes late can create a negative impression.
  • Be honest and direct. Confidence is important, but avoid exaggerating your experience.
  • English is often enough for international students, but learning some Czech can help you stand out and make daily life easier.

Final Thoughts

Finding a job in Czechia as an international student can seem challenging at first, but it gets easier once you understand the process. Focus on building a strong CV, preparing for interviews, and learning how the local work culture works.

And don't get discouraged if things don't work out immediately. Every application and every interview teaches you something. The right opportunity will come, and when you land that first job, the whole process starts to feel much less intimidating.

As a student living abroad, celebrating Christmas can be a bittersweet experience. For the past two years, I've been far from the familiar warmth of my family and lifelong friends, finding myself feeling homesick most of the time. This feeling intensified, considering I also celebrate my birthday in December, leading to three consecutive celebrations - birthday, Christmas, and New Year - all far from my loved ones. However, little did I know that these Christmas celebrations would evolve into an unexpected adventure of joy and connection.
