The "Applied Sciences in Engineering" study programme provides individualized training for researchers working on problems at the interface between engineering and the natural sciences. The content of the programme is determined by the topic of the dissertation, which falls within one or more of the following areas: Computer simulations = Development of numerical models and computer simulations of problems in the fields of elastic body mechanics, fluid mechanics, acoustics, transport phenomena in rock media, electromagnetism, piezoelectric systems, smart materials, and metamaterials. Related coupled, stochastic, inverse, and optimization problems. Physics and Optics = Development and application of methods in the fields of optical measurements, interferometry, digital holography and microscopy, laser technologies, compressed sensing, and optical measurements in fluid mechanics. Materials = Piezoelectric and ferroelectric materials, smart materials and metamaterials, nanofiber materials and nanostructures, filtration and membrane technologies and processes.

Study

Graduates of the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Liberec, possess in-depth theoretical knowledge of the relevant natural science foundations and corresponding engineering disciplines, as well as practical knowledge in the field of scientific experimentation and the analysis of results. They are capable of conducting independent scientific and research work, particularly in their field of study. They are prepared to create and present engineering and scientific results at the international level in their field and are capable of participating in engineering, development, and research work at various industrial, research, and scientific institutions. Graduates will find employment primarily as scientific, research, and development staff in industry, research and development organizations, and in education as university instructors or research project leaders. Emphasis is placed on the alignment of research specialization with an understanding of broader interdisciplinary contexts. The interdisciplinary nature of the proposed dissertation topics and the composition of courses in the Individual Study Plan (ISP) ensure that graduates acquire knowledge from at least two fields of study—the application of advanced mathematical methods in measurement and materials engineering, research into technologies based on a deeper study of physical phenomena, etc. The programme fosters the practical application of the latest scientific findings. The faculty recruits students for doctoral studies both from among graduates of its own master’s programs and from among students at other Czech and foreign institutions.
