What made you decide to study in Czechia?
I chose Czechia because it offers quality higher education with affordable tuition compared to many other European countries. The country is also very central in Europe, which makes it easy to experience different cultures. I was particularly drawn to the University of Ostrava because of its English Philology program, which matches my academic and career goals.
Did your studies meet your expectations? How did you find the study programme, instructors, university facilities? Were there any differences from studying in your country?
Yes, my studies have met my expectations. The university feels very welcoming, and I feel like I belong here. The instructors enjoy what they are doing, and the classes are engaging. The facilities support independent learning, and the program gives students space to take responsibility for their own progress. This system was different from my home country, but it has helped me grow.
What was the biggest surprise with regard to studying or living in Czechia?
The biggest surprise for me was how essential the Czech language is in Ostrava. Unlike in other cities, English is not always widely spoken, but this has encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and learn more Czech. At the same time, a very positive surprise was how welcoming the university environment is. From the professors who enjoy what they do to classmates who are open and friendly, I quickly felt a sense of belonging. Another wonderful surprise is how easy it is to travel both within Czechia and to neighboring countries. Visiting different cities and cultures has made my student experience even richer.
What was your most memorable experience or what did you enjoy most as a student in Czechia?
Meeting like-minded people who share the same values has been one of my most memorable experiences. It has helped me become more confident and enjoy myself at the same time. The friendships and sense of community here have made my student life both meaningful and fun.
How do you think your time in Czechia has helped your studies and/or your career?
Studying in Czechia has given me independence, adaptability, and confidence. The supportive academic environment and the opportunity to interact with people from many different backgrounds have prepared me for my career as an English teacher. It has taught me how to connect across cultures and adjust to new systems, which contributes greatly to both my studies and my professional growth.
Do you have any advice for students thinking about studying in Czechia?
My advice would be to learn some Czech before coming, not just for practical reasons but also because knowing the language is a way to truly understand the country and its culture. In Ostrava especially, Czech is used much more than English in everyday life, so even essential phrases can make things smoother. At the same time, don’t worry — the university is welcoming, professors are supportive, and translator apps can help until you feel more confident.
